7 Days Tracking Gorilla in Rwanda

Drive from Kigali to Nyungwe National Park, while on the way you will get to see the landscape and understand why Rwanda is dubbed as 'The Land of 1000 Hills'.

Since this is a long trip, you may want to stretch out your legs, and so will be broken up with a number of stops. You will get chance to visit Nyanza, where you can visit the former palace of the last Rwandan King, later head to Butare National Museum.

After lunch, you will proceed to Nyungwe, passing through the forest along the way, and see playful primates playing by the road as you travel.

Day 1: Kigali - Nyungwe National Park

Depart from Kigali after breakfast for the long but beautiful drive south to Nyungwe National Park, this drive to Nyungwe will prove why Rwanda is called 'The Land of 1000 Hills'. This trip will be broken up with number of stops. You will pay a visit to Nyanza, where you can visit the former palace of the last Rwandan King, later on you will make a stop at the Butare National Museum.

After lunch, you will proceed to Nyungwe, passing through the forest along the way, get the chance to see playful primates playing by the road as you travel.

You'll arrive at your Nyungwe accommodation in time for dinner and a good night's rest.

Day 2: Nyungwe Forest National Park

After the breakfast you will start your exploration of Rwanda's mysterious and endangered chimpanzee population. With only four hundred chimpanzees in the country, there's no guarantee you'll see the chimps during your day's hike, but your guide will guide you to get a glimpse of other closest relatives in the animal kingdom.

Even if it won't be your lucky day to spot chimpanzee, the park has a wonderfully diverse that you'll get a chance to explore both morning in your hunt for chimpanzees and after lunch.

During the afternoon, you will go in search of another of the park's primate residents – the cheeky black and white colobus monkey. These playful primates are an easier hike than the chimpanzees, and you'll delight in their antics.

Again dinner and overnight will be in hotel of your choice inside the park.

Day 3:Nyungwe Forest National Park - Lake Kivu

Start your day with your choice of a guided waterfall walk or walk along the Nyungwe Forest National Park's famous elevated canopy walk.

Both offer a unique perspective on this beautiful park, and you'll find a new appreciation for Rwanda's natural beauty as you move through this dense forest.

After your morning activity, you'll make your way to Karongi on the shores of Lake Kivu. The drive to this beautiful city takes you along one of the most scenic stretches of road you'll ever encounter - wending your way through hills and valleys along the way.

Day 4: Lake Kivu - Volcanoes National Park

Start your day with a morning boat ride on Lake Kivu, taking in the serenity and beauty of this massive freshwater lake. As you enjoy boat ride, you will take in the gorges, mountains, creeks and islands that make for one of Rwanda's most beautiful panoramas.

After a luxurious lunch proceed to Musanze on the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park, here you will visit to the Gorilla Guardian Village to learn more about Rwanda’s pre-colonial past.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking

Get your breakfast at the hotel you, proceed directly to the Volcanoes National Parks offices where you will meet your guides, after the briefing, you will commence the once in a lifetime experience of tracking the enigmatic mountain gorillas.

This tracking experience could take two to six hours of trekking through the mountain forest at relatively high altitudes, and there is no guarantee how long or how difficult your tracking experience will be since it depends where gorilla’s family is and the weather condition. One thing for sure is fitness is recommended for all wish to undertake the excursion.

The most memorable experience you are likely to encounter is when you get close contact with the gorillas when you get to find them and understand their family dynamics and getting to learn a bit about each gorilla’s distinct personality in their calm environment.

Day 6: Volcanoes National Park - Kigali

Another exploration day, today you will concentrate in a different facet of the gorgeous Volcanoes National Park region, and you can opt one of the following activities.

Golden Monkey Trekking
Trek through sun-dappled glades and dense stands of bamboo in search of these playful monkeys, who are costumed to visitors. While here you will get to see golden monkeys playing, feeding and leaping from one tree to another without get intimidated by your presence here. Your time here is limited to just an hour, but you will get the best of it to see inquisitive creatures in their natural habitat.

Mt. Bisoke Hike
This hike takes you five to a full day to complete the round trip, this is much solely depending on your physical fitness and number of stops you make. The doomed volcano, at 3,700m high mountain with a deep crater at its top and makes for a pleasant but still physically demanding day's hike. If you're lucky, you may even spot some of the park's resident gorillas on your hike.

Dian Fossey Experience
Following in the footsteps of Dian Fossey, the woman behind Gorillas in the Mist, you'll venture into Volcanoes National Park to pay a visit to the great woman's former research site and the grave where both her and her beloved companion, Digit were buried after their untimely murders. Like the Mt. Bisoke hike, this trek takes you into the Volcanoes National Park, giving you’re the opportunity to spot some of its primate residents.

In the afternoon, you'll return to Kigali to overnight.

Day 7: Kigali

Take your breakfast early in the morning then gear up for a city tour covering some of the city's most famous sites including the craft markets, genocide memorial and the campaign against genocide museum.

After finish all the activities, you will be transferred to the airport for your next destination.
