Bird Watching in Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro is one of the largest unflooded and unbroken calderas in the world that isn’t a lake. It’s wall soar to up to 610m and 300sq kms in area, which provide the setting for an incredible natural drama, as pray and predators graze and stalk their way around the open grasslands, swamps and acacia woodland on the crater floor, which is breathtaking natural wonder.

The area contains over 25,000 large animals including 26 black rhinoceros. There are 7,000 wildebeests, 4,000 zebras, 3,000 eland and 3,000 Grant's and Thomson's gazelles. The crater also has the densest known population of lions, numbering 62. Higher up, in the rainforests of the crater rim, are leopards, about 30 large elephants, mountain reedbuck and more than 4,000 buffalos, spotted hyenas, jackals, rare wild dogs, cheetahs, and other felines.

The legendary annual wildebeest and zebra migration also passes through Ngorongoro, when the 1.7 million ungulates move south into the area in December then move out heading north in June. The migrants passing through the plains of the reserve include 1.7 million wildebeest, 260,000 zebra, and 470,000 gazelles.

Birding in Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, you'll depart from your hotel for Ngorongoro Crater.

Ngorongoro crater offer a stunning playground for birders, this is a bird-watcher paradise, the birds inhabited here range from migrants birds from Europe and Asia, whilte-eyed slaty, flycatcher and Livingstone turaco. Big number of specialized grassland birds are resident in the crater. Most noticeable are ostrich, kori bustard, crowned crane and secretary bird, migratory birds are present from November to April.

Among the migrant birds in crater you can see the lesser Kestrel, the European swallow, European bee eater, the northern wheatear, European roller, pallid harrier, Caspian lapwing and the montagu’s harrier. During wet season you can see the Rosy breasted long claw and large flocks of European storks.

Tree nestling birds found here are the superb starling, Rufos tailed waver and the African backed vulture. the Ngorongoro also inhabited by birds of prey such as the Augur buzzard and the long-crested eagle.

Both the crater and the highlands offer an excellent birding experience, with 500 species recorded, Ngorongoro Crater is the best playground for photographer and birders.

When to Visit?

Birdwatching

Although birdlife is generally good throughout the year, from November to April migratory birds from Europe and northern Africa are present, and many resident birds are in breeding plumage. This makes it the best time for bird watching. The best time to watch wildlife is during the Dry season, which is June to October.

Walking Safari

Suitable walking routes include the area from Olmoti Crater to Embakai Highlands and down to the Great Rift Valley, the Northern Highlands Forest Reserve and the Eastern Plains around Nasera Rock, Gol Mountains and Olkarien Gorge.

Oldonyo Lengai

Located outside NCA, to the north-east near Lake Natron, raise 1830m above the valley floor. This is also called “mountain of God”

Birdwatching

Flamingos are very common at lakes in the NCA, all of which are saline. Flamingos are filter feeders and feed on plankton.
