Bird Watching in Selous

Selous Game Reserve is Africa’s largest game reserve and one of favorite game viewing areas in Africa. With an area of 50,000 square kilometers, about three times the size of South Africa’s Kruger National Park and twice the size of Serengeti National Park this is amongst the largest protected area in Africa and inarguably the best for game drive and birders.

Selous is utterly beautiful, it’s beauty is matched by the quality of safari, such as boating, standard game drives, walking safaris and legendary fly camping trips in wildlife area, which make selous an outrageously good safari park and essential component of any southern circuit itinerary. At the heart of Selous Game Reserve, is where Tanzania’s largest river, the Rufiji is found, forms a complex network of channels, lakes and swamps create and outstanding ecological systems in East Africa.

The nature of this complexity provides water supply for the region’s animals and towards the end of dry season where concentration of animals around these water sources is phenomenal. Majority of camps are based here, and game viewing is superb.

The Rufiji river split the reserve into two different sections

The Northern selous
It’s just 5% of the reserve’s total area, no hunting is allowed here; this area is exclusively for photographic safaris

The Sourthern selous
This split up te into a number of hunting blocks – each of which typical cover about 1,000km square.

During dry season (July - middle of November) animals concentrate in on the few permanent water sources. The sheer volume of animals in the Selous is superb, putting most parks in Africa to shame. Selous has it’s reputation as the last truly stronghold for African wild dog.

When to Visit?

Birdwatching

Although birdlife is generally good throughout the year, from November to April migratory birds from Europe and northern Africa are present, and many resident birds are in breeding plumage. This makes it the best time for bird watching. The best time to watch wildlife is during the Dry season, which is June to October.
