What to Expect on This 2-Day Ol Doinyo Lengai Trek

Rising majestically near Lake Natron in northern Tanzania, Ol Doinyo Lengai is unlike any other volcano in Africa — or the world. Revered by the Maasai as the “Mountain of God,” this active volcano is the only one on Earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a rare, fast-flowing black lava with a much lower temperature (510–600°C) than typical magma. Though cooler, it is still fiery and otherworldly — a geologic marvel that few have seen up close.

Situated in a dramatic and remote landscape filled with pink flamingos, lava fields, and waterfalls, Lengai offers an unforgettable trekking experience that blends natural wonder, cultural connection, and pure adventure.

Best season to visit: June to October (cool and dry), January to early March (warm and dry)

Essential Gear for This Trek

🧳 Rent or Buy Your Gear?

If you’ve already climbed peaks above 5,000 meters, you likely have most of the gear needed for Kilimanjaro. But for many of our guests, this is their first big trek — and that’s perfectly okay!

At Africano Paraiso, we recommend renting gear locally if you're not planning future climbs. A full kit can cost over $1,000, while rentals for essentials like sleeping bags, down jackets, and trekking poles are typically just $250–$300.

Planning more hikes? Then investing in your own equipment makes sense. Just remember: a full kit can weigh 15–17 kg. This matters when booking flights to Zanzibar or safari extensions, where luggage limits often cap at 15 kg.

Even experienced hikers often rent heavier gear for convenience. Whether you rent or bring your own, Africano Paraiso ensures you're fully prepared for a smooth and unforgettable Kilimanjaro experience.

No gear list available at the moment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The trek is steep and strenuous, gaining about 1,760 meters in elevation in one night. It’s considered the toughest 1-day climb in East Africa, but no technical gear is required — just good fitness, endurance, and determination.

The best months are June to October and January to early March, when the skies are clear and the trail is dry. Avoid the rainy season (March–May), as conditions can be slippery and visibility limited.

Yes! The camp is designed with sustainability and the environment in mind, supporting local Maasai communities and minimizing its footprint in this fragile ecosystem.

Lake Natron is home to over a million flamingos, as well as zebras, gazelles, and various bird species. You may also see wildlife along the way from Arusha, including giraffes and wildebeest.

You can enjoy guided walks to Ngare Sero Waterfalls, visit the Hominid footprints, take a sunset drive to the lake, or simply relax in the natural spring pool with a drink. Traditional Maasai massages are also available at camp.

The trek takes 7 to 12 hours round-trip, starting around 1:00 a.m. to reach the summit by sunrise. The descent is faster but requires caution due to the steep slope.

Basic hiking gear is sufficient, including sturdy trekking shoes, a headlamp, warm layers, and plenty of water. Africano Paraiso will provide a detailed gear list and can assist with rentals if needed.
