What to Expect on This 2-Day Ol Doinyo Lengai Trek

Rising majestically near Lake Natron in northern Tanzania, Ol Doinyo Lengai is unlike any other volcano in Africa — or the world. Revered by the Maasai as the “Mountain of God,” this active volcano is the only one on Earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a rare, fast-flowing black lava with a much lower temperature (510–600°C) than typical magma. Though cooler, it is still fiery and otherworldly — a geologic marvel that few have seen up close.

Situated in a dramatic and remote landscape filled with pink flamingos, lava fields, and waterfalls, Lengai offers an unforgettable trekking experience that blends natural wonder, cultural connection, and pure adventure.

Best season to visit: June to October (cool and dry), January to early March (warm and dry)

Your journey begins in the morning as our Africano Paraiso driver picks you up from your hotel in Arusha. The scenic drive to Lake Natron is a visual feast, with sweeping landscapes and Maasai villages along the way. After arriving and checking in at the lakeside lodge or camp, you’ll enjoy lunch followed by a guided walk to the Ngare Sero Waterfall — a refreshing trek through a narrow gorge with streams to cross, so sandals are recommended.

In the evening, enjoy a short drive to the shore of Lake Natron, where flamingos create a surreal pink reflection against the alkaline waters. After capturing some stunning sunset photos, return to camp for dinner and rest in preparation for your midnight ascent.

At around 1:00 a.m., we drive you to the base of the volcano where your night climb begins. The terrain is steep and challenging, and the dark adds an extra layer of intensity. Guided by your expert Paraiso mountain guide, you’ll ascend steadily, stopping often to catch your breath and adjust to the altitude.

By sunrise, you'll stand on the rim of the 2,960-meter summit, watching steam rise from the crater and hearing the eerie rumble of molten lava beneath your feet — a moment of awe and reward. After enjoying the view, begin your careful descent, watching each step as the steep slope can be more demanding on the way down.

At the base, your driver will welcome you back with cold drinks and smiles, followed by a short transfer to the lodge for a quick shower and early lunch. From there, we begin your journey back to Arusha, filled with memories of one of Tanzania’s most extraordinary experiences.

Essential Gear for This Trek

🧳 Rent or Buy Your Gear?

If you’ve already climbed peaks above 5,000 meters, you likely have most of the gear needed for Kilimanjaro. For many guests, this is their first big trek — and that’s perfectly okay.

We recommend renting locally if you’re not planning future climbs. Full kits can exceed $1,000, while rentals are often $250–$300 for essentials.

Planning more hikes? Investing in your own equipment can make sense — but remember luggage limits, especially for Zanzibar and safari add-ons (often 15 kg).

No gear list available at the moment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The trek is steep and strenuous, gaining about 1,760 meters in elevation in one night. It’s considered the toughest 1-day climb in East Africa, but no technical gear is required — just good fitness, endurance, and determination.

The best months are June to October and January to early March, when the skies are clear and the trail is dry. Avoid the rainy season (March–May), as conditions can be slippery and visibility limited.

Yes! The camp is designed with sustainability and the environment in mind, supporting local Maasai communities and minimizing its footprint in this fragile ecosystem.

Lake Natron is home to over a million flamingos, as well as zebras, gazelles, and various bird species. You may also see wildlife along the way from Arusha, including giraffes and wildebeest.

You can enjoy guided walks to Ngare Sero Waterfalls, visit the Hominid footprints, take a sunset drive to the lake, or simply relax in the natural spring pool with a drink. Traditional Maasai massages are also available at camp.

The trek takes 7 to 12 hours round-trip, starting around 1:00 a.m. to reach the summit by sunrise. The descent is faster but requires caution due to the steep slope.

Basic hiking gear is sufficient, including sturdy trekking shoes, a headlamp, warm layers, and plenty of water. Africano Paraiso will provide a detailed gear list and can assist with rentals if needed.
